Buying an eSIM before you fly
The single cheapest decision in travel connectivity is made about a week before departure, on your sofa. This guide explains why prices at the airport and on your carrier's roaming bill are structurally higher, when a plan actually starts counting down, how far ahead to buy without tripping over expiry windows, and what to set up before you board.
Why the same data costs more at the gate
Three separate mechanisms push the airport and roaming prices up, and none of them is about the data itself.
- Captive demand. A kiosk past security is selling to people who cannot leave and cannot shop around. That is a pricing power story, not a cost story.
- No visible comparison. Online you can see six providers ranked by price per gigabyte on one screen. At a counter you see one offer and a queue behind you.
- Roaming is a different product. Your home carrier prices roaming as an add-on to a domestic contract, often as a daily pass. Travel eSIM providers buy wholesale capacity and resell it as a bundle. The two are priced on completely different logic, which is why the gap outside an inclusive roaming zone is usually large rather than marginal.

Install, activate, expire - three different clocks
Buying early is only safe if you understand which clock starts when. There are three, and travellers routinely confuse them.

Refund windows differ a lot
Buying ahead also buys you leverage, because almost every provider is far more generous about a plan that has never been activated. Among the providers we track, Saily offers a full refund on non-activated plans within thirty days, Nomad offers thirty days for unused plans but makes its unlimited plans non-refundable outright, Ubigi requires the request within fourteen business days, Holafly runs a six-month window and charges an administration fee on connection-issue claims that must be raised during the trip, and both Airalo and Maya Mobile end the statutory withdrawal right the moment the plan activates.

The countries where buying ahead is not optional
Two destinations in our data make pre-purchase a hard requirement rather than good practice. Saily eSIMs cannot be purchased from within the United Arab Emirates, so arriving without one removes that provider entirely. In Turkey, Saily warns its app may be blocked and Ubigi states its own site and app are inaccessible from inside the country, which matters because both Saily and Maya Mobile install through their apps rather than a QR code.
The general rule follows from those examples: if your provider needs an app or a website to complete installation, that dependency must be satisfied before you are standing in the arrivals hall.
The pre-boarding checklist
- Confirm the handset is eSIM capable and unlocked. Both are covered in device compatibility.
- Buy the plan a few days out, on home wi-fi, after comparing price per gigabyte.
- Install the profile immediately and check the new line appears in settings. Do not enable it yet.
- Label the line something obvious so you are not guessing at 2am in a taxi queue.
- Install and sign into the provider app if the provider needs one, and screenshot the QR code and order reference in case email is unavailable.
- Download offline maps, a playlist and anything you plan to watch. This is what keeps the plan you bought big enough.
- On landing, switch the travel line on, enable data roaming for that line only, set it as the data line, and turn automatic data switching off.

If you forgot
Airport wi-fi is usually enough to buy and install an eSIM, so the recovery is real, just stressful. Do it before you leave the terminal, while a reliable connection still exists, and prefer a provider that installs by QR code rather than by app in case the app is the thing that will not load. Then compare properly for the rest of the trip rather than accepting the first offer you find.
Common questions
When does an eSIM plan start counting down?
For most travel eSIMs the validity period begins when the profile first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it. That is what makes buying days ahead safe. It is not universal, so check the wording on the plan page before you buy a short plan a long way in advance.
How far in advance should I buy a travel eSIM?
A few days to a week before departure is the sweet spot. It gives you time to install on home wi-fi, verify the line appears in settings and resolve any problem with support while you are still on a reliable connection, without sitting on a QR code long enough for it to expire.
Can I buy an eSIM after I land?
